The Parc de La Villette is one of Paris' most reknown and loved parks. Located in the 19th arrondissement and including the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the Cité de la Musique, the Zenith, the Philarmonie de Paris and the Halles de La Villette, this park of 55 hectares has free access. He is the biggest of Paris (not counting Boulogne and Vincennes' woods).

The ancient slaughterhouses of Paris were located on this ground since Napoleon III's time and have been destroyed in 1974 to be relocated at Rungis (in the South of Paris). After some hesitations about its future, in 1979 it was decided that it will held a vast park, museums and artistic venues. In 1987 the park and all the cultural plannings opened their doors. To be noted: the park is not fenced. It is done so to provide a urban continuity.

There's a big playground for kids from toddler age to pre-teenagers. My children went to the young kids area. The park should plan to renovate it! Some games were a bit old...

Elections municipales à Oberursel: posez vos questions aux candidats! / Oberursel's mayoral elections: ask the candidates!

Bonjour chères lectrices et chers lecteurs,
Hello dear readers,

Next month, on Sunday the 21st of June 2015, we will have the mayoral elections in Oberursel. The administrative team will stay for six years and the current mayor Hans-Georg Brum (SPD), who has already held the post two times, is candidate once more with the town treasurer Thorsten Schorr as his opponent (CDU).

Being an inhabitant from more than 3 months in Oberursel and coming from a European Union country, I will have the opportunity to vote for this election. I have in fact already received my polling card - Wahlbenachrichtigung - (with the name of the voting office, etc). For those who won't have received until Saturday the 30th of May, contact as soon as possible the electoral office at this number 06171 502-270 or send an email at wahlamt@oberursel.de. Be careful because the electoral roll is closed 16 days before the election day.

As I'm used to since I am able to vote (my 18 years old birthday...), I will compare the both candidates' program.

Hans-Georg Brum et/and Thorsten Schorr

My fellow blogger, and journalist for the Oberurseler Woche, Graham Tappenden will interview the candidates the first week of June. Being a UK citizen and living here in Oberursel for many years, some of his questions will have topics about the life of the foreigners in the city. For more informations about this interview, the mayoral elections and submit your questions, please read his excellent post on All Things German.

20 mois de bilinguisme / 20 months of bilingualism

With my children, I speak French. More precisely, our family speaks French among ourselves. English and German that my husband and I have learned (or are still learning...) are used only when someone speaking these languages are at our home. However, living in Germany for 20 months now, we are daily exposed to German. And my children understand it better every day.

Gabriel, 6 years old since January 2015, will start in Primary school September the 8th.

My son will start Primary School at the next start of schoolyear and in germany (and also in France), all the future students of Grundschule (the German word for Primary school) have a medical interview with a school doctor to see if he's fit for school, needs a medical follow-up -like with a logopedist, a ENT, a ophtalmologist, a rheumatologist, ect - and if the school should prepare something to welcome him in case of a handicap (in the best way possible).

So, Gabriel had not so long ago different and easy tests with two charming women and as I thought it would be, "everything's ok". I was pleased to hear that they have positive points of view conserning the fact we speak "only" French at home (the minority language). Also, one of the tests about language acquisition made the child give the name of the objects drawn in a picture. Gabriel knew all the objects... but not all the German words for them. Far from frowning, the doctor simply asked "Und in Französisch?" (= And in French?) He then answered in French, with a nod and a translation on my part when he was right. The whole interview happened in the same way, in a relaxed atmosphere, respectful of the child and his language abilities.

My son, ready to go back home after Kindergarten.
If you ask him to describe what he's wearing,
he would be able to do it in both French and German.

A few weeks ago, my son started to go once a week to a logopedist. He has some issues with the sounds "cheu" and "seu", in German or in French. The logopedist explained it was not a problem with the German language - even if there are more difficult words for Gabriel in it - but with his speech. Mister is a bit lazy as regards the movements of the tongue, the teeth or the lips... And we agreed that Sophie follows her brother in that aspect. She will have surely an advantage on her brother regarding the vocabulary, but her pronunciation has good chance (hum, hum, risks) to be failing. That saddens me a bit because I have been able to pronunce rather well since my childhood all the sounds. The issue seems to come from the paternal side...

So you will understand, my son is becoming bilingual (with tiny touch of English here and there...). He likes to sing songs in german even if the words are not the right ones (argh! the music from the Haribo's ads!) and uses in French sentences some German words he has learnt in the Kindergarten. Nothing special here. New word / new object or concept in a language, it will be favored for a time.

Sophie, 3 years old sinc March 2015, will start Kindergarten September 8th (it's going to be busy day!)

Here's the thing: Gabriel has started to talk to his sister in a mix of , for now, 80% French and 20% German. And the Miss answers him... in her very personnal dialect! She had her third birthday in March and she still hasn't done the step toward a specific language. I do not wish for her to chose between jus German and just French (or even English that she understands way better than her brother), no I would like for her to moderate her "héééhéhéléla henhin..." that I really don't understand anymore!

In truth, the more she ages, the less I understand her beginning or middle of sentences. "héhé henhen ai soif". Hum... I guess she's thirsty. But when we are in a crowded street, it's very difficult to know what she's talking about. I see that it frustrate her that we can't always understand her. Sometimes, she doesn't even try to say a sentence and prefer to stay with the words and expressions she masters. Yet, she loves when I explain her new words, new things.

My daughter is rather partial to French (well, she's always with me...) but can answer a bit in German and English. In the U-Bahn, either she does the shy one, or she has a noisy melt-down (we pick up her brother at the time when she's the most tired), or she runs in the alley, a thing I always regret, and laugh quite out loud. I think the neighborhood is starting to recognize the "little French"...

I don't want to stress her, I wish for her to take all the time she needs in her development. And well, children don't have linear and similar development. There are steps where they concentrate more on an aspect than another... Nowadays, she is more in an imitation and empowerment phase. Not about potty training (it comes very slowly...). The soon-to-be arrival of her little sister pushes her to grab some "baby's life" habits, even though she's eager to become a "big girl": going to the Kindergarten (starting school in september is way to long a wait for her!), getting dressed by herself, spreading soap and washing herself, helping with household chores, etc.

It does not prevent my daily work with her, when we play together or when she helps me to do things, to articulate the words, teach her new expressions, count on her fingers or recognize letters.  I love so much when she turns toward me and asks me "French?" while wwatching a movie or listening to a song. She tends to ask more for movies in English rather than in German when it's a DVD taken at the local library (the languages available are usually German, English - if it's the VO -, Turkish and Italian).

The experiences my children will have to face in the upcoming months:

I think that her start at the Kindergarten will help Sophie in mastering German speech, but that she will retain her preference for English (like her mother...). I will try everything possible for her to interact with English speaking children each week. On another side, her brother has totally appropriated his "new identity" as a French living in Germany. His languages are French and German and English is for later! Perfect, he will have English classes as sson as third grade.

My husband and I are of course going to stand our ground with our kids about speaking French at home. We will help each one when questions will arise in another language, and Gabriel would have to read his lessons at home with me or his father. I'm still debating with myself if I follow the same programm as the one he will have at school to teach him French (letters, numbers, syllabes, colors, etc). I'm going to take look at the French speaking website about homeschooling to find ideas and material for lessons. I hope too that the printables we wish to develop with a group of bloggers on MKB will help Sophie and Gabriel to connect their different languages.

If you have any advices on websites about "homeschooling in French", learning German or/and English to young children, as much as educativ games in several languages, I'm interested! Leave the links in the comments section, below (so that the other readers may make the most of it!)

This month, I have chosen to feature a post about Switzerland from the blog Marie's Pastiche:

My husband being half Swiss, I ought to teach my kids about their roots. They already know about chocolate and fondue, cows and yodel, the Lac Léman and the "R" added to the words in Swiss-German... (IK-R-EA makes them laugh at once!) Now, with the help of Marie-Claude's post - and the one from Carrie - I have more ideas to how we can discover Switzerland from home!

Thank you for linking-up, and we can't wait to see what you've been up to!
