[World Cup for Kids] Finale !

And here we are, tomorrow it's the finale game of this World Cup. Germany versus Argentina. I won't be able to watch it (rha!!!) but I will think about the players who will give their best to win and offer a good game to the public. Whoever wins, these two teams were solid in their play and respected rather well the "fair-play". So may the best team win! (Even if I support Germany, that doesn't forbid me to say "Good Luck" to the both of them.)

Monday, we will take off the garland of flags and we will start thinking about the holidays.

I'm thrilled to see that my son enjoyed discovering the culture of foreign countries through articles in some friends' blogs of the Multicultural Kid Blogs community. I hope he will still be hungry for understanding the world that surround him. His sister has rather liked to see pictures and videos too. She is as much inquisitive as Gabriel (even more) and I can't wait to be able to share more with her!

Ah oui, autre chose.
Ah yes, the last thing. I have to confess that I listened for the first time to Shakira's song "Lalala" only the 1st of July! And of course, I love it (I prefer by far the spanish version). Ideal to dance and the video clip is beautiful. Very sponsored too, but well...

Bon match!
Good game!

[World Cup for Kids] One World Futbol Contest

The MKB community is really excited to support One World Futbol in their mission to bring the healing power of play to youth worldwide through their nearly indestructible soccer/football. The One World Futbol never needs a pump and never goes flat—even when punctured multiple times—due to its ingenious technology. But what we truly love about their model is for every ball purchased, they donate one to organizations working with youth in disadvantaged communities worldwide.

Our Special Giveaway

We have a special giveaway planned during the World Cup with Multicultural Kid Blogs and One World Futbol. It's unlike a usual giveaway as this time you, my readers, are using your collective power to vote to give the ball away to a community in need!  I need your help so I can donate one of the One World Futbols (generously supplied by One World Futbol) to:

 FESAKAM e.V.
(for the development of school facilities in Cameroon)

But here's the thing--there are 9 blogs participating in this contest, and One World Futbol will donate balls to the three blogs that get the most shares on their posts.

So I need your help. Please SHARE this post on Twitter, Facebook, G+ and Pinterest and contribute with your vote to help me donate this One World Futbol.  Each share make directly from this post is tallied as a vote.  And whoever get the most votes, donates the ball!  Let's show how strong our voices are with our votes.
We have until midnight ET on Sunday, July 13, to get as many shares as we can on this post.  (The tally will be made based on the number on the social share buttons at the end of this post).  So let's start now!

One World Futbol

One World Futbol Project is a B-corporation based in Berkeley, CA and was founded by Tim Jahnigen, the inventor of the One World Futbol. It was inspired by refugee youth in Darfur, who had such indestructible spirits - and love for football! - despite their hardships. Tim Jahnigen wanted to give them something more, so he invented a soccer ball that would never need a pump and would never go flat, even when punctured multiple times. One World Futbol Project and its virtually indestructible ball have now reached 170 countries and continue to bring the healing power of play to youth worldwide. The Buy One Donate One model makes it easy for consumers to donate these amazing One World Futbols to needy communities.
Here is more on their work in one community in Brazil:

[World Cup for Kids] Un peu de géographie française avec mon fils / A little bit of french geography with my son

The World Cup approching, the german shops' windows had begun to be decorated with the colors of their national team and obviously Gabriel saw it (Sophie too...)

He had also seen the Panini collector booklets at the supermarket, placed on the counter near the cashier, and with his puppy look, he had made me add one in my shopping cart. Every two days, we take time to add some stickers. My son loves to look for the matching numbers, sort the new carts by countries and discover new pieces of stadiums.

With the topic "Flags" from June's MKB Blog Carnival, I had to look again into my knowledges on the French flag. So I decided to follow this lead and talk about geography with my 5 years old son.

We started by looking at the place of France in the world, by searching our small country on the globe ha has in his bedroom.

Then he did for perhaps the hundredth time his puzzle of the French regions. He do it quite quickly for 1 year and a half. There are 22 regions in metropolitan France, but as our actual government wishes to reduce their number, this puzzle will be likely soon a relic of the past...

Here are some informations that I have already talked about with my son (and I will have to do it again because he doesn't always listen...)

* au Sud: l'Espagne et l'Andorre
* à l'Est: l'Italie, la Principauté de Monaco, la Suisse et l'Allemagne
* au Nord: le Luxembourg et la Belgique
The metropolitan France has land borders with 8 countries:
* South: Spain and Andorra
* East: Italie, Monaco, Switzerland and Germany
* North: Luxembourg and Belgium

Quatre étendues maritimes la bordent:
* la mer Méditerranée (qui connait des marées d'amplitudes extrêmement faibles)
* l'océan Atlantique
* la Manche
* la mer du Nord
Four maritime areas border it:
* the Mediterranean sea (which knows tides of extremely low amplitudes)
* Atlantic Ocean
* the English Channel
* the North Sea

The biggest French urban areas are (stats from 2011):
1/ Paris: 10 516 110
2/ Lyon: 1 567 537
3/ Marseille / Aix-en-Provence: 1 560 921
4/ Lille: 1 018 809
5/ Nice: 943 665

As Germany won the game against France tonight, in the Quarter Finale, I won't write posts bout this country for the World Cup for Kids project. However, keep an eye open... there are some surprises on the menu! And you could also read the post about the countries still playing on my friends' blogs.

[World Cup for Kids] A wedding in France / Un mariage en France

Today France played against Nigeria and won 2 - 0. So you will have another post in the next few days. But as for today 30th of June, I will explain you how you marry in France, what are the mandatory steps you can't forgo...

*****

I have been married the 29th of July 2006 at Villejuif's town hall (Val-de-Marne). It's where I lived before my wedding. Jonathan and I thought about "going in front of the major" at the XIVth arrondissement of Paris, where Jo lived, but the town hall was closed on Saturday afternoon for weddings... And that was not the case in my town.

Jonathan and I, after the civil wedding, in the Pablo Neruda's park in Villejuif (just behind the town hall).

We went to Villejuif's town hall in February to give our wedding file, with all the necessary administrative papers. It's at that moment that we knew for sure the date and hour of our wedding (I had come to inquire a few days before...) The registrar verified our files, noted our wedding for the 29th of July at 2:15pm and asked us some questions about the rights and duties of the spouses, just to see if we were aware of them.

On the morrow, the bans were published -the notes saying we will marry-. In France, after 10 full days, a wedding can be pronounced. It's the legal delay so that anyone who oppose or knows something that could cause the empechement of the wedding, should be able to manifest himself / herself.

* les mariés.
* une personne ayant l'autorité administrative de les unir dans le mariage (le/la maire ou tout(e) autre adjoint(e) ayant délégation de pouvoir) et une personne servant de greffier.
* un témoin (ou deux) pour chaque époux, ayant plus de 18 ans.
Et c'est tout!
To celebrate and validate a wedding, you need:
* the spouses
* someone having the administrative authority to celebrate a wedding (major or deputy major) and a clerk.
* one (or two) witness for each spouse, being older than 18 years old.
And that's it!

Our witnesses will sign the wedding act.

Of course, most of those "formalities" are attended by a consequent number of guests who sit in the marriage hall of the selected city. Ah yes, a precision: in France, no civil marriage on a beach (for example). The civil ceremony has to be held in a room, in the town hall, that has to be open to public (not behind closed doors).

Everyone are sitting, the deputy major can begin!

The ceremony can be very short if there aren't too many guests and the major just read the legal stuffs - 10 minutes top chrono!-, and even a bit "cold" (I attended a wedding where the major was rather very cold towards the future bride and groom...), but in general the officiant is happy to proceed and the mood can quickly be both solemn and joyous. We say "yes" each in our turn, with emotion in the voice and the sheers of family and friends...

I have a great memory of the deputy major who married us. She was very kind and brought a touch of humor. Well, our guests were in a pretty good mood too, that helps!

Some of my friends thought I didn't say "yes" aloud enough. So I repeated myself... very loudly!

After the act is read, the State representant sign, as do the clerk. Then, it's the witnesses and finaly the newlyweds. If you wish to exchange rings (if you don't do a religious marriage or it doesn't entail a ring exchange), it will be done after the signatures. And that's how the wedding ends. The clerk gives you the family record book, that you have to keep all your life, and you can go out of the room.

* vous marier religieusement après (seul le mariage civil compte aux yeux de la loi française)
* faire une séance photo
* faire la fête avec votre famille et vos amis
* maudire vos talons hauts à minuit et chercher des pansements contre les ampoules
* couper un gâteau devant les dizaines d'yeux avides de sucreries de vos invités
* et toutes autres choses qui vous passent par la tête!

If you wish, you can also (already tested by us):
* have a religious wedding after (only the civil marriage is the legal one in France)
* do a photo shoot
* party with family and friends
* curse your high heels at midnight and seek some dressings against blisters
* cut a cake in front of crowd of avid guests in need of a sugar rush
* and everything that goes through your head!

10 Songs in French about foreign countries / 10 Chansons en français à propos de pays étrangers [World Cup for Kids]

Today, France plays against Equador for a qualification in the 8th finals. I really hope my country will win and pass to the next round!
To wait for the game, I have selected 10 songs that have french lyrics and speak about a foreign country / city.

1
Nathalie, Gilbert Bécaud (Russie / Moscou)
The story of the meeting between a french tourist in 60's Moscow and his beautiful russian guide/interpreter.

2
Les lacs du Connemara,  (Ireland)

3
Je m'appelle Bagdad, Tina Arena (Irak / Bagdad)
Here's a bit of infos about the song and the clip.

4
Le plat pays, Jacques Brel (Belgique)
Jacques Brel was a belgian singer, songwriter, actor and poet. The song of the old lovers is one of my favorite from him.

5
L'Amérique, Joe Dassin (USA)

6
Mexico, Luis Mariano (Mexique)
A very well known operetta in France! But the singer, Luis Mariano is even more beloved!

7
Beaux Dimanches [Dimanche à Bamako], Amadou et Mariam (Mali / Bamako)
The singers are a couple on scene and in life, from Mali. They became blind during their youth and met at the Institut for young blind people in Bamako. They are very well known as World Music artists.

8
Manhattan-Kaboul, Renaud & Axelle Red (USA & Afghanistan)
Bon, cette chanson me fait pleurer à chaque écoute...
This song is about the events of September 11th (2001) and how two people from different countries can be tied to this event. One is a trader who died in the attack on the WTC and the other is young afghani girl who is killed during a bombing in the following war.

9
This song is festive and reenact the Carnaval spirit in Rio.

La Compagnie Créole: Vive le Douanier Rousseau

Bienvenue dans les îles tropicales!

[World Cup for Kids] Paris: a walk between Sciences, Arts and History / Paris: une promenade entre Sciences, Arts et Histoire.

If today the french team encounters the team of Switzerland, I will not talk about the History between those two neighbor countries. That would take too long and it would be a bit too personnal as my husband is half French and half Swiss.

So instead, I will lead you into a nice walk in Paris, the French capital city. A trail you can do with your family - baby-buggy and all! Let's discover a part of the city where sciences, arts, and history  meet.

Start: Porte Saint-Martin (metro: Strasbourg - Saint-Denis, line 4, 8 and 9)
End: Fountain Saint-Michel (metro: 4 or RER C: Saint-Michel)
Duration: 45 min (without the museums, the photo stops and the children in the park...)
Distance: 2,3 km

Distance: 2,3 km

1: Porte St Martin

We start our walk at the Porte St Martin. There was an ancient gate of the wall build under the regn of Charles V but demolished and rebuild in 1674 at the orders of Louis XIV to honor his victorious battle in the Rhein and Franche-Comté areas.

Walking on the St-Martin's street, you will see on your left a beautiful building. It is the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers (CNAM), which has a museum and a training center. If you like science and inventions, here's the place to visit!

On the other side of the street, you have a park, the square Emile Chautemps, including a playground, that can be a great spot for a small rest after the visit of the CNAM.
You also have the Gaîté Lyrique, the museum of numerical art and concerts, right near the park. If you like video games, concerts, numeric animation, etc, this place is for you!

When you arrive at the cross road between Rue St Martin and Rue Réaumur, on your right you will see the old building (built in 1912) that was one of the first market gallerie that existed in France: the Felix Potin retail business.

A little further, in the Saint-Martin' street, you can see the church Saint-Nicolas des Champs.

5: Beaubourg

Following St Martin street, after 400m you will arrive at the Centre George Pompidou, the well-know Contemporary Art Museum. You can visit it or go to the library to browse some art books.

Don't go without a glimp on the Stravinsky fountain! She's on the other side of the square, in St Merri's street.

Walking in the last part of St Martin's street, you will reach the Tour Saint-Jacques, last vestige of a church that was once there...

The Fontaine du Châtelet or Fontaine de la Victoire is situated on the square between the Theatre of Paris and the Theatre du Châtelet.

You will love crossing the Seine on the bridge "Pont au Change" and through the "Ile de la Cité". Some monuments can be visited (Notre-Dame, the Conciergerie, the Sainte-Chapelle, etc). However, just walking around and having a look at all these different type of architecture should leave you with a great feeling of wonder.

9: Fontaine Saint-Michel

To end your journey, cross the Seine on the Saint-Michel's bridge. You're then on the Left Bank  and at the St Michel's fountain!
As you will certainly be hungry, choose one of the numerous restaurants in the area. But beware of the tourists traps with menu at 10 or 12€.

From here, you can also go to the Sorbonne, St Germain's area, the therms of Cluny (Museum of the Middle-Age) or the Pantheon. For the books lovers, many bookstores exist in this neighborhood. If your children wish to play a bit, you can take the bus or walk to the Luxembourg's garden (some pictures and tips here), following the boulevard Saint-Michel.
