But what is a "Cueillette" (= picking)? To answer simply: to harvest vegetables and fruits in gardens and orchards that are in free access. You pay what you have harvested in your baskets and wheelbarrows.
Depending on the "cueillettes", you can harvest potatoes sacks, green beans and baskets full of salads, tomatoes, pickles, cabbages and turnips, or it can be punnets of raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blackcurrants, or orchard's fruits like pears, medlars, quinces, apples or almonds.
Some "Cueillettes" propose self-service flowers too. You make bunches of flowers depending on your desires and at fair prices.

The "Cueillette of Torfou" is located in the middle of fields and propose vegetables, fruits and flowers. No baskets at the entrance but green wheelbarrows. Some bags are given at the cashier for the veggies, and punnets and baskets are borrowed or bought for the berries. As it was our first time and we decided this stop after the lunch pic-nic, we were not equiped. Mommy had to do the pulling out and the harvest (my husband was taking care of our daughter and was showing her the different plants to occupy her), and I quickly had issues with my back and my hands. Next time we will go in a "cueillette", we will take with us bags, baskets, gloves (zucchini's leaves scratch the arms and eggplants sting...), a knife and pruning shears. I was lucky I put on jeans that day, my legs stayed free of scraches. My darling with his bermuda shorts couldn't go far without hurting himself between the zucchinis plants and the raspberries bushes.

With our harvest, I was able to prepare a big pot of ratatouille which I freezed the half for later. I also baked a rhubarb pie (with coconut but it was not part of our harvest) and stewed rhubarb. Tomatoes will be prepared with fresh salad. Swiss chards are going to be delicious cooked with some crème fraîche and spices. No need to mention the strawberries (500g harvested and a hurt back) have already been eating with spirit. They were so delicious!

The only question that needs to be asked is: when will we go again?

Update 4th March 2016:
As we moved to Germany one month later (something I totally didn't know when I wrote that post), we weren't able to go back. Sadly, we have some here around Oberursel when it's asparagus and strawberries season. Well, we will see if we will take time to crawl between the lines of strawberry plants.

Tu m'as donné envie.
RépondreSupprimerI love going to pick-your-own places, we have an excellent one about 50 mins from us which is just a little too far to go often but we try to get there from time to time. I hope your one in Germany is as good as this one. I can't believe you didn't know you were moving with only a month to go , that's crazy! Thanks for linking up to #AllAboutFrance
