Paris: visitez le Sacré-Coeur / Paris: a visit at the Sacré-Coeur

At the end of last September, while we were in France, we had the opportunity to visit the Sacré-Coeur in Montmartre with the kids, and more precisely to climb on the top of the dome. I remember that the day was a busy one: the travel from Oberursel to Paris, unloading the car, park it in a public parking reserved in advance, eat a quick snack and walking quite a lot (a nice park, a walk in Montmartre and going back to the rented flat, the kids and us were worn down and ready to go to bed).

Hum, hum. Il y en a un qui n'a pas le vertige!
So, we were on a trip in Montmartre when Gabriel saw the sign showing the entrance for the visit of the dome, and of course he wanted to go up there. After the Eiffel tower and the Montparnasse tower, he had decided to go on top of each tall monument he would see... Hum, hum. Someone is clearly not prone to vertigo!

We bought the tickets (free for the kids younger than 4 years old), and started to climb the stairs. First came a spiral staircase. With many stairs...
Then, we arrived on the roofs. Beautiful gargoyles and stone tiles were waiting there. [I have to confess that now I wish to visit the towers of Notre-Dame and the roof of the Opéra Garnier...]

The last spiral staircase, tiny and a bit dark, was behind us and we were on the corridor surrounding the top of the dome. Oh the fright we had! The edge of the "windows" is so low and it's so easy for a young child to lean and... you see what I mean. My husband and I had to grasp the kids' hand. Well, when Gabriel didn't escape and run further away... No warnings are written at the entrance, near the cashier, to explain this "detail" and it seems to me that it's a bit light on a security level.
However, the sight is magnificent. We can pinpoint several monuments or reknown places of Paris.

Voici une vue panoramique depuis le dôme:
Here's a panoramic view from the dome:

Aucun respect...
I was talking about the corridor, below is a picture. Over the numerous visits, some fan of "traces" have left theirs. No respect...

These opening in the stone panels are vents for the staircases:

We stayed on the top around ten minutes (it was already long with two mini tornados who thought that it was "cool place"...) and climb down by a different path, but still with lovely views of the basilica's roofs.

Once we were on solid ground, we visited the interior of the church (I couldn't take photos, I had to take care of Sophie who did not want to go back in her stroller).
The Apse Mosaic is gorgous and the Grand Organ is impressive. The last one has to be heavily renovated and donations are welcomed.

To finish our afternoon, we wandered in the streets of Montmartre. When the children will be older, I will bring them to the Musée de Montmartre to discover the artists who made the hill one of the high cultural place of the city.

  1. Your photos are truly beautiful! This really took me back to when we visited this basilica last year! It truly is a beautiful church with some amazing views. The dome was already closed when we got there (late in the day) so we didn't get to climb to the top. I can highly recommend the towers of Notre-Dame, though. That is my favorite spot to view the city of Paris from above! (I had to laugh at your description of mini tornadoes!)

    1. Thank you Sarah. When I too the pictures, I thought they wouldn't be good because I made a few mistakes in the options on the camera. Guess it turned not that bad...
Sad that it was closed, but next time, you will go earlier in the day.
