[World Cup for Kids] Paris: a walk between Sciences, Arts and History / Paris: une promenade entre Sciences, Arts et Histoire.

If today the french team encounters the team of Switzerland, I will not talk about the History between those two neighbor countries. That would take too long and it would be a bit too personnal as my husband is half French and half Swiss.

So instead, I will lead you into a nice walk in Paris, the French capital city. A trail you can do with your family - baby-buggy and all! Let's discover a part of the city where sciences, arts, and history  meet.

Start: Porte Saint-Martin (metro: Strasbourg - Saint-Denis, line 4, 8 and 9)
End: Fountain Saint-Michel (metro: 4 or RER C: Saint-Michel)
Duration: 45 min (without the museums, the photo stops and the children in the park...)
Distance: 2,3 km

Distance: 2,3 km

1: Porte St Martin

We start our walk at the Porte St Martin. There was an ancient gate of the wall build under the regn of Charles V but demolished and rebuild in 1674 at the orders of Louis XIV to honor his victorious battle in the Rhein and Franche-Comté areas.

Walking on the St-Martin's street, you will see on your left a beautiful building. It is the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers (CNAM), which has a museum and a training center. If you like science and inventions, here's the place to visit!

On the other side of the street, you have a park, the square Emile Chautemps, including a playground, that can be a great spot for a small rest after the visit of the CNAM.
You also have the Gaîté Lyrique, the museum of numerical art and concerts, right near the park. If you like video games, concerts, numeric animation, etc, this place is for you!

When you arrive at the cross road between Rue St Martin and Rue Réaumur, on your right you will see the old building (built in 1912) that was one of the first market gallerie that existed in France: the Felix Potin retail business.

A little further, in the Saint-Martin' street, you can see the church Saint-Nicolas des Champs.

5: Beaubourg

Following St Martin street, after 400m you will arrive at the Centre George Pompidou, the well-know Contemporary Art Museum. You can visit it or go to the library to browse some art books.

Don't go without a glimp on the Stravinsky fountain! She's on the other side of the square, in St Merri's street.

Walking in the last part of St Martin's street, you will reach the Tour Saint-Jacques, last vestige of a church that was once there...

The Fontaine du Châtelet or Fontaine de la Victoire is situated on the square between the Theatre of Paris and the Theatre du Châtelet.

You will love crossing the Seine on the bridge "Pont au Change" and through the "Ile de la Cité". Some monuments can be visited (Notre-Dame, the Conciergerie, the Sainte-Chapelle, etc). However, just walking around and having a look at all these different type of architecture should leave you with a great feeling of wonder.

9: Fontaine Saint-Michel

To end your journey, cross the Seine on the Saint-Michel's bridge. You're then on the Left Bank  and at the St Michel's fountain
As you will certainly be hungry, choose one of the numerous restaurants in the area. But beware of the tourists traps with menu at 10 or 12€. Some of the restaurants showing these prices don't have a good value. Some ideas to eat: bistrots, restaurants -where you can book online and have discounts or the ones near a Underground station...

From here, you can also go to the Sorbonne, St Germain's area, the therms of Cluny (Museum of the Middle-Age) or the Pantheon. For the books lovers, many bookstores exist in this neighborhood. If your children wish to play a bit, you can take the bus or walk to the Luxembourg's garden (some pictures and tips here), following the boulevard Saint-Michel.
